Chapter 3

1 This5026 second1208 letter,1992 beloved,27 I now2236 write1125 to you; in both which3739 I stir1326 up your5216 pure1506 minds1271 by way1722 of remembrance:5280

2 That you may be mindful3403 of the words4487 which were spoken4280 before4280 by the holy40 prophets,4396 and of the commandment1785 of us the apostles652 of the Lord2962 and Savior:4990

3 Knowing1097 this5124 first,4412 that there shall come2064 in the last2078 days2250 scoffers,1703 walking4198 after2596 their own2398 lusts,1939

4 And saying,3004 Where4226 is the promise1860 of his coming?3952 for since575 3739 the fathers3962 fell asleep,2837 all3956 things continue1265 as they were from the beginning746 of the creation.2937

5 For this5124 they willingly2309 are ignorant2990 of, that by the word3056 of God2316 the heavens3772 were of old,1597 and the earth1093 standing4921 out of the water5204 and in the water:5204

6 Whereby1223 3739 the world2889 that then5119 was, being overflowed2626 with water,5204 perished:622

7 But the heavens3772 and the earth,1093 which are now,3568 by the same846 word3056 are kept2343 in store,2343 reserved5083 to fire4442 against1519 the day2250 of judgment2920 and perdition684 of ungodly765 men.444

8 But, beloved,27 be not ignorant2990 of this5124 one1520 thing, that one3391 day2250 is with the Lord2962 as a thousand5507 years,2094 and a thousand5507 years2094 as one3391 day.2250

9 The Lord2962 is not slack1019 concerning4314 his promise,1860 as some5100 men count2233 slackness;1022 but is long-suffering3114 to us-ward,1519 2248 not willing1014 that any5100 should perish,622 but that all3956 should come5562 to repentance.3341

10 But the day2250 of the Lord2962 will come2240 as a thief2812 in the night;3571 in the which3739 the heavens3772 shall pass3928 away with a great noise,4500 and the elements4747 shall melt3089 with fervent heat,2741 the earth1093 also2532 and the works2041 that are therein1722 846 shall be burned2618 up.

11 Seeing then3767 that all3956 these5130 things shall be dissolved,3089 what4217 manner4217 of persons ought1163 you to be in all holy40 conversation391 and godliness,2150

12 Looking4328 for and hastening4692 to the coming3952 of the day2250 of God,2316 wherein1223 3757 the heavens3772 being on fire4448 shall be dissolved,3089 and the elements4747 shall melt5080 with fervent heat?2741

13 Nevertheless1161 we, according2596 to his promise,1862 look4328 for new2537 heavens3772 and a new2537 earth,1093 wherein1722 3757 dwells2730 righteousness.1343

14 Why,1352 beloved,27 seeing that you look4328 for such5023 things, be diligent4704 that you may be found2147 of him in peace,1515 without784 spot,784 and blameless.298

15 And account2233 that the long-suffering3115 of our Lord2962 is salvation;4991 even2531 as our beloved27 brother80 Paul3972 also2532 according2596 to the wisdom4678 given1325 to him has written1125 to you;

16 As also2532 in all3956 his letters,1992 speaking2980 in them of these5130 things; in which3739 are some5100 things hard1425 to be understood,1425 which3739 they that are unlearned261 and unstable793 wrest,4761 as they do also2532 the other3062 scriptures,1124 to their own2398 destruction.684

17 You therefore,3767 beloved,27 seeing you know4267 these things before,4267 beware5442 lest2443 3361 you also,4879 being led4879 away4879 with the error4106 of the wicked,113 fall1601 from your3588 own2398 steadfastness.4740

18 But grow837 in grace,5485 and in the knowledge1108 of our Lord2962 and Savior4990 Jesus2424 Christ.5547 To him be glory1391 both2532 now3568 and for ever.2250 165 Amen.281

Chapter 3

1 IT has been a long time since I have writ ten you, my beloved, but now I write you this second epistle; in both of them I have endeavored to stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

2 That you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment, given through us, the Apostles of our LORD and Saviour:

3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days mockers who scoff, following after their own lusts,

4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since our fathers passed away, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

5 Of this they are willingly ignorant: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water, and in the water;

6 And those men, because of whose deeds the world of that time was overflowed with water, perished:

7 But the present heavens and earth are sustained by his word, and are reserved for fire on the day of judgment which is the day of destruction of ungodly men.

8 But, my beloved, do not forget this one thing, that one day is with the LORD as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

9 The LORD is not negligent concerning his promises, as some men count negligence; but is longsuffering toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

10 But the day of the LORD will come as a thief in the night, when the heavens shall suddenly pass away, and the universe shall separate as it burns, and the earth also and the works that are in it, shall pass away.

11 Now since all these things are to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in your holy conduct and godliness,

12 Looking for and longing for the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being tested with fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, in which dwells righteousness.

14 Therefore, my beloved, while you look for these things, be diligent that you may be found by him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

15 And consider that the long suffering of the LORD is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you;

16 As also in all his epistles, he spoke concerning these things, in which there are certain things so hard to be understood that those who are ignorant and unstable pervert their meaning, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction.

17 You therefore, my beloved, seeing that you know these things beforehand, beware, lest you follow the error of the lawless, and fall from your own steadfastness.

18 But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ, and of God the Father. To him be glory both now and forever, and through all eternity. Amen.
